“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, And from the heights of Hermon, From the Hill Mizar. Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me.”Psalms 42:5-7
The Psalms can help us search our own heart. What is really there? How pure are our intentions? Is there any area that we need to surrender to the Lord?
The Psalms can also help us align our heart with the heart of God.
In Psalm 42, the psalmist is an utter turmoil. Even though he’s in a dark place, he’s searching for God. Knowing that his only hope is to set his heart on God, and to remember that God has always been his rescuer.
We can search for God in our struggles and our failures. Likewise in our successes and joys. There is a deepness in God that equally matches our deep need for Him. “Deep calls unto deep.” If we can find that sweet place, seeking Him through prayer and worship, then we can be in a place of true peace. Even though our situation does not change, even though the waves do not cease but continue to bury us, we can have peace in Him.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3
Matthew Henry said, “The way to forget the sense of our miseries is to remember the God of our mercies.”
Also, “Whatever waves and billows of affliction go over us at any time we must call them God's waves and his billows, that we may humble ourselves under his mighty hand, and may encourage ourselves to hope that though we be threatened we shall not be ruined; for the waves and billows are under a divine check.”
Go calls us to more. To know him more. To seek Him deeply with all our being. To be transformed into His image. Even through the pains and disappointments in life.
“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
II Corinthians 3:18
