Psalm 77 can be a guide to us during times when it seems that our prayers are not being answered, or at least heard, like we would like them to be.
It is a Psalm that we can use as an overlay to the times in our lives when it feels like our heart cries out with no place to rest.
It is during those times when it is good to remember what God has done in the past. This is the place where we can rest. We can soak in the goodness of God’s past acts.
Asaph next said that he remembered God, but was still troubled. Initially, he refused to be comforted. It was only when he pressed in, and really pondered on the specific ways God had moved in the past that Asaph could finally get to the place where he was able to say, “…Who is so great a God as our God?” Psalms 77:13
I found this in John Eldridge’s Enduring Word app. I thought it was such a cool, practical way to live out verses 10-12. “I will remember...I will also meditate...and talk of Your deeds: Asaph presented a three-step process to encouragement and healing. It begins with remembering God’s great works, His wonders of old. Then we should meditate on those works, and what they may have to teach us today. The third step is to talk of these great things with others.”
The very end of the Psalm holds a sweet truth.
“You led Your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron." Psalms 77:20
God led, the Israelites and continues to lead us, through the waters. He has a plan and a purpose for our struggles. Always, but especially during times of trial, we have the opportunity to lean into God. The truth of how good He is can illuminate our chaos and bring hope to our weary hearts.
“When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths. The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed. Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook. Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there! You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.” Psalms 77:16-20
