We are all a work in progress. We all have areas where God is transforming us. We all have things that we can shed to be more like Jesus.
That being said, the Corinthian church was at a point in their faith where correction was needed in order to get back on track.
Paul addressed several areas of disfunction in his letter. Pride, lawsuits, marriage, idols, worship, unity, spiritual gifts.
No doubt this was a difficult letter for him to write. He started the church in Corinth. He loved them. However, it was out of this deep love that Paul knew there were things that needed to be addressed.
If Paul was attempting to point the Corinthians toward God, it makes sense that he would include an entire section on what love looks like as God is love. “But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8
If we want to even begin to emulate Jesus, we have to emulate love.
Love doesn’t mean being passive and overlooking sinful behavior, but it does mean having enough of a concern for people to enlighten them to a better way of living.
“…But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.” 1 Corinthians 12:31
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
“Let love be your highest goal! ….” 1 Corinthians 14:1
