“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”Romans 12:19-21
Paul wrote these words to the Romans as they were possibly things that the Roman believers were struggling with, but this letter is also a letter to us.
Evil can look so many different ways. It can be external, from someone else. Someone else’s bad mood or attitude. It can be internal. An internal battle. Unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, resentment.
Don’t be overcome by … fill in the blank. Still the recipe is the same. “…conquer evil by doing good.”
When I was younger and was dealing with someone that I didn’t get along with, my mama would to tell me, “Sarah, kill em with kindness. It will drive them crazy.” It was so true! And it worked. When we are kind to someone who is not being kind to us, it can change the atmosphere or at least it tends to silence them.
“Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.” Romans 6:5-8
Paul was enlightening the Roman believers, teaching about freedom from sin. We don’t have to live in the sin we previously participated in. We are actually called to live above that. In the case of retaliation, maybe previously we would have tried to conquer evil with evil. However, this is not the way for the believer.
Christ has set us free!
We can live in a place of freedom through Jesus, through His Word. Through memorizing scripture that says do good to those who seek to hurt you.
It isn’t about a formula.
It’s about the power of the Holy Spirit working inside a believer.
Evil can overcome us if we allow. But not in our own ability. Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit to be with us. To help us.
“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.”Ephesians 6:10-13
