“Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”” John 3:3-8
Nicodemus was a Jewish religious leader, a Pharisee. He was looking for clear, definite answers from Jesus. The black and white. However, Jesus was trying to enlighten him to a truth that can be difficult to accept - there are things that cannot be explained. The carnal mind cannot comprehend or reason them. But our spirit will revel in the words that Jesus spoke. Those precious words are spirit and they are truth.
Just like we can see how a windy day affects the area it touches, we can see how the Holy Spirit affects the individual’s life that has been born again.
We can’t explain this process of salvation that leads to baptism, we just know something is different. It’s just Jesus. We’ve become a new creation when we accept Christ.
Baptism represents a death.
“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” Colossians 2:12
Baptism is a powerful act of faith. It is an action we can take that proclaims our trust in Jesus. It doesn’t really make sense but when we come up out of that water, we come up different. New.
Getting baptized is something we do because we are saved; not something we do to get saved.
Baptism also represents our rebirth. It is the outward expression of something amazing that happened on the inside.
