The Word, Our Source and Strength
December 28, 2025
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.”John 1:1
“But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ””Matthew 4:4
The Word is Jesus. He is our spiritual food, nothing else can satisfy or sustain us. We were created to desire spiritual things and ultimately, eternity. “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”Ecclesiastes 3:11
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”
Matthew 5:6
There is a physical hunger, but there is also a spiritual hunger. Actual food satisfies the physical hunger, but the physical can never satisfy spiritual hunger. We can get it messed up sometimes. We can actually think that a good cup of coffee, a new car, or a promotion at work will fill us. Only the Word can satisfy to a point of true contentment.
So how does the Word satisfy past the superficial “I’ve had a good day” feeling. We read it, think deeply on it, pray it. Then it starts to become our food. We can go back to that table again and again and not leave with a stomach ache. Read it, think deeply on it, pray it.
“You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.”2 Timothy 3:15
We can know the scriptures without knowing Jesus. We can have encountered the words without encountering the Word. The disciples had learned scripture in their youth. They could recite the books, all the words. Yet they had never met the one who the words were referring to. Now they have. The knowledge that they had learned allowed them to fully know the One standing before them, speaking to them. The Christ.
If we know the scriptures it gives us a deeper appreciation for who He is and what He did for us. His holiness. This knowledge will cause a deeper hunger for Him. The more I know about Him, the more I realize how much I need Him. Every moment. On my own I am no good. When I lean into who He is, He shines through. That is where contentment is attained.
The word allows us to see ourselves clearly; it reveals our heart. That we are lowly, He is great. All pride dies in His presence.
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”John 14:26
The Holy Spirit will cause us to remember scripture, but we have to do the work to read and study it. We can read and read and at the end of the day we may or may not remember what we have read. If it’s in our heart, it will bubble up at just the right time.
“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”John 1:14
If we will become a lover of the Word, our love for the Lord cannot help but increase greater than we can fathom. He will fill the deepest places of our heart. Full to overflowing.
It will always be come back to Emmanuel, God with us. It is our baseline and our pivot point. He is with us in so many ways. When we lay down the distractions and study the scriptures He is sure to reveal Himself to us.
